Hazel was a little mermaid. She was gentle and brave. She liked to help.
She lived in the Magical Menagerie. It was a busy place. There were soft turtles. There were shy seahorses. There were fish that sparkled like tiny lamps.
One morning, Hazel said, “Hello, home!”
But something was different.
The coral arch looked dull. The pebble path looked gray. Even the bubble rings looked sleepy.
Hazel blinked. “Where did the colors go?”
A warm breeze swirled in the water. A Guardian Spirit appeared. It looked like a calm light with kind eyes.
“Hi, Hazel,” it hummed.
Hazel held her tail still. “I feel funny. I miss the bright colors.”
The Guardian Spirit nodded. “The colors are hiding. We can find them. We will restore them, little mermaid.”
Hazel smiled. “Yes! Let’s go.”
They swam to the Jellybell Garden. Jellyfish floated like round bells.
Hazel whispered, “Are you hiding color?”
One jellyfish wiggled. A tiny red glow popped out. It looked like a button.
“Red!” Hazel clapped. “Come back, please.”
The red glow slipped into Hazel’s shell necklace. The shell shone rosy.
They swam on to the Kelp Tunnel. The kelp was tall and tickly.
Hazel giggled. “Tickle, tickle!”
The Guardian Spirit said, “Listen.”
Hazel listened. She heard a soft “plip-plip.”
A blue droplet hid under a kelp leaf.
Hazel spoke kindly. “Blue, it’s safe. You can sit with red.”
The blue droplet slid into the shell necklace. Now it glowed purple for a moment. Hazel gasped.
Next was the Mirror Pool. The water there was so still.
Hazel looked down. She saw her own face. She saw the Guardian Spirit beside her.
She also saw a little yellow sparkle stuck on her nose.
Hazel crossed her eyes. “Boop?”
The Guardian Spirit chuckled, “Boop.”
Hazel rubbed her nose. The yellow sparkle jumped into the necklace. Now it shone warm like sunshine.
They had red, blue, and yellow.
But the Menagerie was still not fully bright.
Hazel felt a tiny worry. “What if we can’t find the rest?”
The Guardian Spirit drifted close. “Breathe slow. You are doing it.”
Hazel took a slow breath: in… out…
Then she heard a faint “ting!”
It came from the Quiet Cave, where the shy seahorses slept.
Hazel swam softly. “Shhh. Hello.”
A shy seahorse peeked out. Around its tail was a green ribbon of light.
The seahorse trembled.
Hazel whispered, “I won’t grab. May I help?”
The seahorse nodded.
Hazel gently touched the ribbon. “Green, you can come with us.”
The green ribbon floated into Hazel’s necklace.
Now the necklace glowed like a rainbow.
Hazel raised it high.
The Magical Menagerie woke up.
Corals blushed pink. Kelp turned bright emerald. Pebbles shone like candy.
The sparkly fish did a happy loop.
The turtles waved their flippers.
Hazel laughed. “We did it!”
The Guardian Spirit said, “You found the colors by being calm and kind.”
A small treasure chest floated up from the sand. It clicked open.
Inside were rainbow shell stickers and a tiny pearl crown.
Hazel put on the crown. “For me?”
“For you,” said the Guardian Spirit.
Hazel twirled in the water. “I am Hazel, Rainbow Mermaid!”
And the Menagerie stayed bright, soft, and safe.
