Kaila's Achievements was a young inventor who lived above the Grand Museum. Her name was unusual, but she liked it very much. “It reminds me that every small try can become a big achievement,” she said.
Kaila wore round yellow glasses and a blue apron with many pockets. One pocket held screws. One held string. One held a tiny spoon. The spoon was for tasting soup, not for inventing. Usually.
Every morning, Kaila opened the museum doors with a cheerful clink. The museum had dinosaur bones, shiny shells, old paintings, and a room full of clocks. It also had one very special room: the Hall of Hidden Wonders. In that room stood a golden chest with a little sign.
THE MUSEUM TREASURE OPENS ONLY WITH KIND, CLEVER TEAMWORK.
Nobody had opened it for a hundred years.
Kaila wanted to try, but she was not boastful. “Perhaps I need friends,” she said. “The best machines have more than one useful part.”
Her first friend was Map Maker. Map Maker wore a green cap and carried rolls of paper taller than his knees. He knew every hallway, every secret stair, and every squeaky floorboard in the museum.
Her second friend was Potion Maker. Potion Maker made safe, silly mixtures in tiny bottles. She could make bubbles that showed hidden dust, glue that smelled like strawberries, and warm tea for anyone with cold hands.
Her third friend was Treasure Hunter. He wore boots with bright red laces and had a magnifying glass hanging from his neck. He loved finding things. Once, he found a missing button inside a suit of armor. “It was hiding,” he explained.
One rainy afternoon, the museum lights blinked. Blink. Blink. Blink.
Then the golden chest gave a soft hum.
Hummmmmm.
A silver keyhole appeared on its lid. Above it, glowing letters swirled in the air.
FIND THE THREE LOST GEARS OF THE WONDER WHEEL.
Kaila clapped her hands. “A puzzle! And maybe a machine!”
Map Maker unrolled a map. “The first gear is in the Dinosaur Gallery. The second is near the Moon Room. The last one is deep below the museum, in the Old Storehouse.”
Treasure Hunter grinned. “Treasure hunt!”
Potion Maker packed three bottles: a blue bubble potion, a purple cleaning potion, and a green hiccup potion. “The green one is not for drinking,” she said. “Unless you are a frog.”
They hurried to the Dinosaur Gallery. Rain tapped the tall windows. The giant dinosaur skeleton looked extra big in the gray light.
At its feet sat a stone door. On the door was a picture of three dinosaur eggs. A deep voice rumbled from the shadows.
“WHO DISTURBS THE HALL OF BONES?”
Kaila held Treasure Hunter’s hand. He was brave, but the voice was very deep.
Out stepped the Ancient Guardian. He was a tall stone statue with mossy shoulders, a beard like a waterfall, and kind amber eyes. He carried a lantern that glowed softly.
“I guard the Wonder Wheel gears,” he said. “Only careful visitors may pass.”
“We are careful,” said Kaila.
The Guardian pointed at the eggs. “Place them from smallest to biggest.”
Treasure Hunter rushed forward. “I know! Big, medium, small!”
“Wait,” said Kaila gently. “Let us look first.”
Map Maker measured the egg pictures with his pencil. Potion Maker used her blue bubble potion. The bubbles floated over the pictures and made the sizes easy to see.
“Small, medium, big,” said all three friends.
Click!
The stone door opened. Inside was a little brass gear, tucked in a nest of soft feathers.
“First gear!” cried Treasure Hunter.
The Ancient Guardian nodded. “You looked before you chose. That is careful.”
Next, the friends hurried to the Moon Room. It was dark and cool. A huge moon model hung from the ceiling. Tiny stars twinkled around it.
But the second gear was stuck high on a shelf.
“I can climb,” said Treasure Hunter.
“The shelf is wobbly,” said Map Maker.
“I can make a bouncing potion,” said Potion Maker.
“That could be fun,” said Kaila. “But it could also make the gear bounce under a cabinet.”
Kaila opened her apron pockets. She took out a spoon, two rubber bands, a cardboard tube, and a small wooden wheel.
“What are you making?” asked Map Maker.
“A Gentle Gear Getter,” said Kaila.
She built a little scoop on the end of the tube. Treasure Hunter held the tube steady. Map Maker showed Kaila where to aim. Potion Maker used a drop of strawberry glue to keep the scoop from falling off.
Kaila reached up. Scoop. Twist. Tap.
Plink!
The gear rolled safely into the scoop.
“Second gear!” everyone cheered.
Then the room began to shake. The moon model swung left and right.
The Ancient Guardian appeared in the doorway. “The Old Storehouse is awake,” he warned. “It does not like loud feet or greedy hands.”
“I do like treasure,” Treasure Hunter said in a small voice.
“Liking treasure is fine,” said the Guardian. “Forgetting your friends is not.”
Below the museum was a narrow stairway. The friends walked down slowly. Step. Step. Step. At the bottom, they found the Old Storehouse. It was full of dusty boxes, old umbrellas, cracked picture frames, and one sleeping museum cat named Marmalade.
Marmalade opened one eye. “Mrrrp.”
In the middle of the room stood the third gear. It rested on a pillow behind a line of tin bells.
A sign said: DO NOT RING THE BELLS.
Treasure Hunter whispered, “I can tiptoe.”
He took one step. His red lace came undone.
Jingle!
Every bell began to ring. Jingle-jangle! Jingle-jangle!
The boxes bounced. The umbrellas popped open. A cloud of dust puffed into the air.
“Oh no,” said Treasure Hunter. “I made a mistake.”
Kaila did not scold him. “Everyone makes mistakes. We can fix this together.”
Potion Maker gave him the purple cleaning potion. “Spray the dusty floor so we can see.”
Map Maker studied the room. “There is a quiet path between the bells. Follow my map marks.”
Kaila made one more invention. She tied soft cloth around Marmalade’s old toy wheels. “These are Silent Rollers,” she said.
Marmalade purred and climbed into a small cart. Kaila gently pushed the cart along Map Maker’s path. It rolled without a sound. At the end, Marmalade reached out one fuzzy paw.
Tap.
The third gear slid onto the cart.
No bells rang.
Treasure Hunter tied his lace tightly. “Thank you for helping me,” he said.
“Teamwork is helping,” said Kaila.
Back in the Hall of Hidden Wonders, the three gears floated above the golden chest. Kaila saw three empty round spaces on the lid.
“Wonder Wheel,” she whispered.
She fitted the gears into place. But nothing happened.
The Ancient Guardian stepped from behind a statue. “One last thing is needed.”
“What?” asked Potion Maker.
The Guardian pointed to a tiny slot beneath the gears. It was shaped like a heart.
Kaila thought hard. Then she smiled. “Not another object. A kind action.”
Treasure Hunter took off his bright red lace. “This is my favorite lace. But it can be a ribbon for the chest.”
Map Maker offered a small map. “This map shows every safe path we found.”
Potion Maker gave a bottle of strawberry glue. “To hold the ribbon in place.”
Kaila placed their gifts together in the heart-shaped slot. Then she added her Gentle Gear Getter, because she wanted the museum to use it whenever something was hard to reach.
The chest glowed gold, blue, and green.
Clunk!
Its lid opened.
Inside were not piles of coins. There was something even more wonderful: a small silver tool box, four inventor badges, and a sparkling little machine with buttons, wheels, and a bell.
A card read: THE WISH-WORKSHOP. BUILD HELPFUL THINGS TOGETHER.
Kaila pressed a blue button. The machine made a tiny bridge for Marmalade to cross. Map Maker pressed a green button. It drew neat maps with stars on them. Potion Maker pressed a pink button. It mixed warm cocoa with a fluffy marshmallow on top.
Treasure Hunter pressed the red button very carefully.
Out came a treasure medal shaped like a gear.
“For me?” he asked.
“For all of you,” said the Ancient Guardian. His stone face looked almost like a smile. “You found the greatest treasure: clever hands, caring hearts, and friends who do not leave one another behind.”
The friends each received an inventor badge. Kaila’s badge was extra shiny. It said: CHIEF HELPFUL INVENTOR.
Kaila looked at her friends and beamed. “This is my best achievement,” she said.
That evening, rainbows from the museum windows danced across the floor. Marmalade rode the Silent Rollers in small circles. The Ancient Guardian rang one tiny bell, just once, because now it was time to celebrate.
Jingle!
And in the Grand Museum, Kaila's Achievements and her friends began building their next wonderful invention together.
